3 Tips for Securing and Remembering Your Passwords

I recently had a few friends that had their email accounts hacked. I provided them with a few tips for creating unique, easy-to-remember, and secure passwords. Afterwards, I thought it would be a good idea to share those tips with the rest of you.
Roboform Password Manager & Form FillerRobos Do Amanhecer (Original Mix)

Use an Easy to Remember Phrase

Most passwords are hacked using simple dictionary attacks. This is why many systems require you to use symbols, mix of capital and lowercase letters, numbers, etc. It helps to prevent your password from falling victim to a simple dictionary attack.
Another (and I think better) way to avoid using words, but maintaining the ease of remembering words, is to use the first letter of every word in a phrase. For example, jbnjbqjjotcs might make a good password. How could you possibly remember such a cryptic password? Easy:Jack Be Nimble Jack Be Quick Jack Jump Over The Candle Stick.

Create Unique Passwords

You also never want to use the same password for multiple systems. You should always try to create a (relatively) unique password for each site you log into. But doesn’t this go against making passwords easy to remember?
Well, you could try unique phrases for each website you log into, but that’s not much better than using different words for different sites and forgetting which ones you used where. Here’s a tip for creating unique passwords for different systems, but still being able to remember your passwords: Use the same phrase, but prepend or append it with the first letter or an abbreviation of the site you’re logging into.
Continuing with our nursery rhyme example, you could use jbnjbqjjotcsfb as your Facebook password, jbnjbqjjotcsgm as your Gmail password, and jbnjbqjjotcst as your Twitter password.

Use Capitals, Symbols and Numbers

You don’t have use capitals, punctuation, and numbers all at the same time, although it certainly doesn’t hurt to do so and some systems even require it. You just have to be sure that whatever combination you use, that you’ll remember it.
With our nursery rhyme password, for our Facebook account, we might try something like: Jbn,Jbq,JjotcsFb13
The end of each line in the nursery rhyme provides a logical place to put a comma. Being pronouns, Jack and Facebook are logical to capitalize. Finally, we added the 13 to the end, because that’s your lucky number. Use easy to remember symbols and punctuation in logical positions within your phrase, to make it easy to remember.

Follow simple steps at ATM

My friend Ashish was traveling to Kolkata and urgently needed cash walked into an ATM to withdraw cash. Unfortunately, the machine was out of order and refused the screen blanked out post entering the password. Due to heavy a rush of people waiting, he had to quickly leave to find another other ATM.
However, within 10 minutes of leaving the ATM, he got an SMS of stating that he had made a withdrawal of Rs 15000. Surprised, he enquired at his bank which confirmed that he carried out a transaction at Kolkata.

Shocked? Well, this has been a common practice for the last one month in Eastern India. There have been many such cases of such frauds. Upon investigation, the police have busted a gang that engaged in the ATM fraud.

What was their modus opernadi

1. This fraud was carried at ATM that required the customer to insert and extract ATM card to initiate a transaction.
2. The fraudsters the gets into the ATM and locks a key in the machine. Then they wait for a customer who needs to withdraw cash.
3. The customer initiates a transaction and enters password but the screen suddenly blanks off due to the locked key.
4. Owing to the rush outside (also caused by fraudsters) outside the ATM, he id forced to leave quickly.
5. Once the customer has left, the thief gets into the ATM. The transaction by the previous customer still being live, the hoaxer releases the locked key completes transaction and withdraws cash.

Below are some simple rules, which ensures that your ATM transaction safe.

1. After your all transactions, you should select ‘Cancel’ to make sure that no one can carry out any transaction through your account after you.
2. If the ATM is not working properly, retrieve your card, select ‘Cancel’ and if possible report it to the security guard or bank.
3. After any transaction at an ATM, ensure you get a copy of the mini statement to make sure your transaction is properly recorded.
4. Subscribe for SMS alert; it helps in case of unwanted transaction.
5. Enter your password carefully and mind shoulder surfers.
6. Don’t throw away your transaction receipt carelessly.
7. Keep your ATM card safe and memorize your password.
8. Be extra cautions in case of an unmanned ATM.
9. Don’t force a card into the ATM slot. If it gets jammed there report it to the bank immediately.
